TYNE BRIDGE, NEWCASTLE: GUANO REMOVAL AND BIRD PROOFING
Client: Main contractor on the Tyne Bridge restoration
The problem: Years of guano had built up inside the bridge's void spaces and birds were still getting in. Restoration crews couldn't work safely inside until it was dealt with.
What we did: An IRATA-led team cleared the heavy guano from the voids in the west sections, temporarily re-proofed the tower entrance service points and boarded the void spaces to keep birds out.
The result: Since 2024 we've been brought back for several phases, including guano boarding, mesh installation, void clearance and a jet wash trial.
